[email protected] In 2004, EU Member States started issuing ePassports with an embedded RFID chip, storing the holder’s identification data, including sensitive biometric data. Standards have been established by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and the Council Regulation (EC) No 2252/2004 of 13 December 2004. The application of standards for travel, identity and residence documents is one of the measures taken to ensure interoperability between documents and inspection systems of different countries.
